Air pollution

Sir, — Mr P. V. Neary (June 23) illustrates how some people expect others to accept a situation merely because it is well publicised. If electricity is to be the only commodity by which folk are able to keep warm, it will become so controlled and expensive that we shall be dying of the cold before we have time to worry about the ozone layer. Mr Neary tells us that fires have been a smog problem since at least the 19305. Why, then, has not a smokeless , fuel been made available, as it has in other countries? I am sure all are well aware they have to do “their bit” towards pollution, and seemingly every other problem. The trouble is that some of us are running out of bits. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) J. DYER. June 23, 1987.

Sir, —A positive contribution towards reducing the Christchurch air polludon problem would be to turn oft bus engines while waiting in the Square. I have often observed how bus engines tend to be left running for some minutes for no apparent reason. The exhaust fumes are terrible. Is that really necessary? Second, an “adjustment control” of carburettors of fuelinjection equipment should be compulsory with the six-month warrant of fitness test. This would ensure reduced emission levels. — Yours, etc., HELGA HOPKINS. June 22, 1987.
