Wheat protest at Auckland wharves

Canterbury wheatgrowers who claimed success in preventing a shipment of Australian wheat from being unloaded at Lyttelton last month have shifted their attention to Auckland where another shipment is due from Australia this evening. At least six Canterbury growers will join farmers from Manawatu, in protest, at the Auckland wharves when the Union Auckland unloads an estimated 18,000 tonnes of Australian wheat.

The protest organiser, Mr Robert McDowell, of Mayfield, declines to say what type of action the protesters would take, but it would be different from that planned at Lyttelton where up to 400 farmers could have been involved. Although growers accepted that imports were necessary to make up a shortfall of 100,000 tonnes in the New Zealand wheat crop, Mr McDowell said, growers were upset about mills willing to pay $350 for Australian wheat yet offering local growers much lower prices.

Mr McDowell said unloading was expected to start on Monday.
