Boeing 767 ‘off course’
PA Sydney An Air New Zealand jet was involved in "momentary misidentification” when it mistook Essendon Airport for Melbourne’s international airport at Tullamarine, the airline said yesterday. The Boeing 767, on a. flight from Wellington, was eight kilometres from Essendon, which is used for cargo and light aircraft, when it was alerted at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday that it was heading off course.
However, Air New Zealand’s public «ffalrs manager in Sydney, Ms . Heather . lottery, . > said news reports that the incident was similar to one involving on aborted landing approach by a Garuda jumbo jet were incorrect "What happened was not as serious as a missed approach,” she said. "The plane had come through a cloud break and there was a momentary misidentification. It was at 500 metres, whereas landing begins at 150 m to 200 m.” . .
