Children’s home to close
One of Canterbury’s remaining children’s homes will close later this year. The Methodist Children’s Home in Hsfrewood Road has been running for 50 years. “A large building capable of accommodating 50 children is an inappropriate form of care these days,” said the mission’s superintendent, the Rev. John Roberts. “It is also costly to maintain, and the inadequacy of Government assistance for running the home has meant increasing annual deficits.” Careful consideration
was being given to alternative placement of the home’s 10 children now in care. The mission was negotiating with the Social Welfare Department to get smaller residential care units for children. Mr Roberts said the mission was not considering selling the children’s home building, and its future use remained uncertain. Cholmondeley Children’s Home, at Governor’s Bay, would be the only children’s home still used in Canterbury.
