Red Cross medal for N.Z. nurse
PA _ Wellington A Wellington nurse, Ms Glenys Rodger-Checchi, has been awarded the coveted Florence Nightingale medal by the International Red Cross. The organisation - presents the award once every two years to 50 nurses from its 145 national branches worldwide. The medal goes to nominated nurses who have “distinguished themselves in time of'peace or war by their exceptional courage and devotion to wounded, sick or disabled persons or those health .is.threatened?*''
Ms Rodger-Checchi, who now works with the International Commission of , the Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, has been with the society for the last seven years. She has worked mainly with war victims — helping refugees on the ThaiKampuchea border and as a theatre nurse with the war surgery team assisting wounded Afghanistan! refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan. The New Zealand Red Cross deputy secretarygeneral, Mrs Jan Smith, said Ms Rodger-Checchi had the rare ability to stay calm and cool in the s most adverse situations.'
