Burglar broke leg in chase

PA Wellington A man broke a leg trying to escape police chasing him after a burglary, the District Court at Wellington was told. Allan Brian Tennant, aged 36, a sickness beneficiary, pleaded guilty to burgling the Miramar Medical Centre and possessing instruments for; burglary on November 28 last year. He also pleaded guilty to possessing prescription drugs at Wellington Hospital on December 3, 1986. Prosecuting, Sergeant lan Ferguson said Tennant jemmied a window at the medical centre. He also had a small torch and a pair of gloves. Tennant searched the centre and took 589 syringes, 230 needles, and assorted controlled drugs, Sergeant

Ferguson said. Tennant drove off but the police chased him to Kilbirnie, where he abandoned his car and attempted to run off. He fell from a fence while trying to escape and broke a leg, Sergeant Ferguson said. While Tennant was in hospital with the injury the police found 16 Valium tablets in his bedside cabinet, Mr Ferguson said. Tennant told the police a friend had given them to him for pain from his leg.. Sergeant Ferguson asked for an order for return of the property stolen from the medical centre. Judge Pethig convicted Tennant on all three charges and' remandedhim in custody to May 22 for a probation report and sentence.
