Keen Pell first leg fancy for Riccarton tomorrow

By

J. J. BOYLE

J Keen Pell’s Nelson Cup fourth on - Monday bore the stamp of an improver’s ■ performance and it bodes well for his “chance in the Hawkins Handicap, first « leg of the Hororata Racing Club’s T.A.B. "double at Riccarton tomorrow. « The consistent chestnut from Hokitika 'will again be opposed by the veiy -durable Blyme, the Nelson Cup runner- * up, so there will probably be even ° divisions of opinion. But most will be less hesitant about plumping for Blyme and i Keen Pell as a dead-set quinella. ; Blyme has been one of the South 3 Island’s most-travelled performers this ' season. He has contested each of the big ' two-milers, yet he has bounced back and -bowed out only in the last stride or two to Vendee in the Nelson Cup. The key to the result of his clash with Keen Pell tomorrow is the improvement, if any, effected by their Nelson Cup runs. Keen Pell gave his jockey, Grant Davison, the feeling that he might have been a race short in last Monday’s race, his first since he ran third in the Great Autumn at Riccarton on Anzac Day. - Blyme was also away from racing between the Great Autumn and the Nelson Cup. He wound up fifth in the Riccarton race.

The switch of Morrie Man to a middle distance brings a wider range of interest to the Hawkins Handicap. He has been performing with fair credit against the sprinters, but wound up too late to do better than third over 1400 m on the second day of the Nelson meeting, and the decision to step up to 2000 m seemed a logical one. The alternative was coming back to 1200 m for the Brentwood Handicap, second leg of tomorrow’s T.A.B. double.

Tirana, top weight in the Brentwood Handicap, has had a freshener since a North Island autumn campaign, which yielded a win over 1200 m at Awapuni on March 21 and later a third over 1400 m at Hastings. If he runs anywhere close to his best, Tirana will pose problems for the others. He has the physique and class to give weight all round. Epatante has obvious appeal as a laststart winner at Nelson. Chris Johnson, who won on Epatante at Nelson, will pair up this time with the Garth Jackson-trained Flowing Silver. This four-year-old is also a last-start winner, but he has been away from racing since he won a class 3 1200 m in style on this course in February. Flowing Silver’s stablemate Black Arrow is also in the field, but might drop out unless the track eases.
