English Derby ride

NZPA-AAP London Brent Thomson, the former champion New Zealand and Victorian jockey, has won an English Derby mount on talented colt, Shady Heights. The colt’s regular rider, Steve Cauthen, had been claimed by his stable for the ride on either the favourite, Reference Point, or second favourite, Legal Bid, which are both trained by Henry Cecil. Shady Heights, trained by Robert Armstrong, was disputing Derby favouritism until finishing second in his last start in the Dee Stakes, at Chester last week.

A hot favourite in that race, he twisted a shoe in the running and was found to have injured his hoof as a result. He was most impressive winning his only other run this season and Armstrong said the injury was the only reason for his indifferent run last time out.

Shady Heights, a son of Derby winner, Shirley Heights, is now on the sixth line of Derby betting at 12-1.
