Kenwood Stud purchases Balmoral Stud

The Kenwood Stud have expanded their Cambridge operations with the purchase of another Cambridge property, the Balmoral Stud, former base of the thoroughbred stallion, Last Tango. Neighbouring the Chequers Stud, the home of the successful thoroughbred sire, Vice Regal, and the Trelawney Stud (which stood Wolverton), Kenwood’s new properly acquisition will be managed by Peter Mounce, who has been Clive Mosen’s right-hand man at the Kenwood Stud in recent times.
"We were looking for a property that would provide year round agistment for mares that visit our stallions,” said Mr Brian Meale yesterday. Due to large patronage for Kenwood’s new stallion, Save Fuel (1:51.2), the successful Albatross stallion, Alba Counsel, will be moved from the Kenwood Stud to the newly acquired 100-acre property for the coming stud season. Due to previous fertility problems the 12-year-old Alba Counsel is limited to only 50 mares. Kenwood takes ownership of the new property
from July 1. The company was also successful in purchasing the three-year-old trotter, Directorship, after the Lordship gelding passed a veterinary examination on Monday. He joins Colin de Filippi’s Pukekohe team today. The stud’s most successful sire, Smooth Fella, gained more kudos last week-end when Baron’s Fella credited him with his 55th individual winner for the season. This is a record for a single season, surpassing the previous best of 54 individual winners by Game Pride and Lordship.
