Call to aid patients more
More should be done by the Government for heart transplant patients, said a trustee of the Belinda Trainor Trust, Mr Graham McDermid, yesterday. The trust has taken out a full-page newspaper advertisement asking the Government to provide more funding for heart transplant patients. “If they will patch up someone who has had an
accident while drink-driv-ing why won’t they patch up someone who has a disease?” said Mr McDermid. . The cost of a heart transplant was not high when compared with the cost of other operations, he said. “For example, a sportsrelated paraplegic accident costs an incredible amount compared . to a
heart transplant. “As quickly as we (the trust) raise money we can dispense if, but the more money we raise the less obligation there is on the Government to do anything.” As well as giving money to heart patients, the Belinda Trainor Trust intended to actively lobby to change the way operations are funded.
