East and West

Sir,—l am sure Vernon Wilkinson (April 29) is correct when he says there is a lot of "deceitful anti-Soviet propaganda” going about, but this must be weighed against a good deal of deceitful pro-Soviet propaganda. I would also agree that a lot' of that twaddle is “swallowed by our gullible New Zealand Rightists, and editorial writers” but, equally, there is no shortage of gullible swallowers in the ranks of our New Zealand Leftists. On balance, I think that when it comes to semantic warfare the Soviets are far better at it than the Americans. It must surely be a tribute to these Soviet skills when a noted moralist and fin-ger-wagger extraordinaire like Vernon Wilkinson can be reduced to vague apologetic mumbling about the Korean airliner “mistake.” — Yours, etc., DAVID SHANKS. May 8, 1987. ’
