Totara war canoe
Sir,—Doubtless we are all expected to be thrilled by Mr Thacker’s generous gesture to the Ngal Tahu people (May 9). Perhaps the Ngai Tahu may be interested in some suggestions for naming the resultant noble vessel. They may care to translate into Maori some of the following for their careful consideration: “Ruthless pre-pakeha land clearance,” “Last few East Coast totaras," “East Coast remnant podocarp forests,” “Monument to needless destruction.” Who are the Ngai Tahu going to war against? Tane? — Yours, etc., B. W. ANDERSON. May 9, 1987.
