Lyttelton prospects
Sir, —I suggest that Lyttelton and Governor’s Bay sewerage outlet problems be solved by building holding tanks at both ends of a pipeline laid on the sea bed connecting these settlements. A holding tank and pumping station at Lyttelton would pump the sewage through a pipeline in the railway tunnel. This pipeline would run to the Bromley plant or, alternatively, connect with Christchurch’s ' sewer lines at Heathcote. I also suggest that the Port Hills gondola be built on the Lyttelton side. This would entail a drive through the road tunnel and historic Lyttelton as well as utilising the visual assets of the Lyttelton basin. Building carparking facilities and gondola towers on the Lyttelton side would leave Heathcote untouched and be inconsequential against the visual scale of the Lyttelton harbour basin. — Yours, etc., A. KERR. . May 5, 1987.
