‘Golden Oldies'
Sir,—My recent Air New Zealand flight to this country was spoilt by the objectionable and anti-social behaviour of a group of passengers bound for the “Golden Oldies” rugby tournament in Auckland. I have written to Air New Zealand asking why this behaviour was allowed to go unchecked throughout the flight, but was galled to read Kevin McMenamin’s account of the rugby tournament (May 8). Mr McMenamin, a guest of Air New Zealand, said that one of the greatest challenges facing the “Golden Oldies” during the week
is “to put a hole in the 1.9 M cans of beer” produced by Lion Breweries for the occasion. This apparently amounts to 67 cans a day for everyone attending the festival. The tone of the article reinforced the impressions gained during my flight with some of the “Golden Oldies” and I am left wondering whether Air New Zealand has its priorities right when its normal fare-pay-ing passengers are so inconvenienced by the self-indulgent behaviour of a small group.— Yours, etc., FREDA J. EXLEY. Cardiff, May 10, 1987.
