50 favourite stories

I Like This Story. Compiled by Kaye Webb. Puffin Books, 1986. 377 pp. Kaye Webb is well placed to select an enticing collection of 50 excerpts from children’s fiction. She launched the Puffin Book Club and edited children’s books for a couple of decades. This collection of cliff-hangers will drive even a reluctant young reader in the direction of library or bookshop to satisfy his or her curiosity. Old favourites are here, such as “Charlotte’s Webb” and “The Hobbit,” but I discovered other tantalising threads to chase. . There is plenty in the humour, time-travel or the less well-known fantasy genres. If any broad generalisation can be made, it is that Kaye Webb prefers English and middle-class tales. This book could also be a good startingpoint for families who read aloud together to sample different possibilities. — Ruth Zanker.
