Fancied drivers justify kart favouritism
More than 50 entries were received for the Christchurch Kart Club’s final meeting of the spring season at the Carrs Road raceway. Racing was over three heats in five classes and the fancied drivers justified their favouritism. The feature event, the Handy Hire 50-lap derby, which has been contested since 1973, went to Damien French with his 130 cu cm kart. French led from start to
finish, but was under pressure from Bob McWhinnie with the 125 cu cm Suzuki and at the halfway point from Robert Oakley with the twin 100 cu cm kart. Both McWhinnie and Oakley struck problems and withdrew. Half a lap behind French, there was a very spirited battle in the 100 cu cm class between Murray Davies, Nigel Wilkinson and Damon Sayer. Davies looked set for second place but his kart’s muffler fell off and he
had to withdraw. Midgets (three heats).— Richard Jones 1, Lee Claughton 2, Myles Spicer 3, Consolation: Tony Witheridge 1, John Watson 2, Graham Le Comte 3.
