Allport’s late entry

Predictions of an easy victory for Malcolm Stewart’s Audi Quattro in Saturday’s Mainfreight ZM/ FM Rally have been thrown into disarray by the late entry of the national champion, Neil Allport of Auckland. Allport will drive his potent Mazda RX7. Allport, who was robbed of certain victory in last year’s event by a broken axle on the final stage, will start at No. 2 in the 71-car field.

The hard-charging Aucklander has suffered ill fortune in previous Mainfreight rallies but the rotary-engined machine should once again be the pace-setter. His battle against Stewart’s four-wheel-drive Quattro should be the highlight of the rally. In the absence of Allport’s regular codriver, Roger Freeth, who is in the United States, Bruce Lees will fill the second seat.
