McAuley retains S.I. target championship
- t - Dave McAuley, of Christchurch, >nd Ann Shurrock, of Ashburton, took the individual honours at the South Island :> archery championships, hosted by the Christchurch Archery Club during Easter. f . ; Archers from Nelson to Dunedin took part in the event) contesting individual and team events in the target, clout and field disciplines. The defending target champion,. McAuley, did not make a good start and at the halfway stage lay in fourth place. In the afternoon round he produced an excellent score to take first place, two points behind a New Zealand record. Shurrock had a close battle with Neroli Fairhall before winning, 1750 to 1705. Steven Henshaw, of Christchurch, made a clean sweep of the boys’ junior titles and also finished jointly with Shurrock on the best aggre-
gate. Earlier this year Henshaw won the national field title at New Plymouth. Henshaw, aged 14, started archery two years ago. He trains at home, shooting hundreds of arrows during the week, watched carefully by his father and coach, Dave. Henshaw. Results: Target Men: D. McAuley (Christchurch) 1667, 1; C.
