Basketballers face big task

By

FRANK DUGGAN

Canterbury will have to play 40 minutes of “real” basketball if it hopes to defeat Saints (Wellington) in the top-of-the-league Countrywide championship at Wellington tomorrow evening, says its coach, Gary Pettis. “We have to play 40 minutes of top basketball, otherwise we will be down the tube,” said Mr Pettis yesterday. "Everyone was told of their responsibilities after the squad members watched a

video of recent games.” Mr Pettis was “pretty confident." In a pre-season league tournament at Hamilton, Saints defeated Canterbury, the 1986 league champion, by 30 points, but Mr Pettis regarded this as a passing phase. “We have six points on the league ladder, being unbeaten in three games, and everything is starting to fall into place,” said Mr Pettis. “The squad is working well and after watching videos of Saints games we know their

strengths and weaknesses.” Mr Pettis will take 10 players to Wellington. They are: Clyde Huntley (captain), Angelo Hill, John Rademakers, Bert Knops, lan Webb, Chris Simpson, Lance Dixon, Diederick van Heyningen, Ralph Lattimore and John Hill. Canterbury’s case has been helped by the withdrawal of Saints’ outstanding New Zealand guard, Frank Mulvihill. He broke a hand at last week-end’s New Zealand trials.
