Minister criticises opponents of Lotto
PA Wellington The Minister of Recreation and Sport, Mr Moore, has criticised members of Parliament who owned racehorses and joined gambling pools while opposing Lotto with “surprise, contempt and disappointment.” Speaking during the second reading debate on the Gaming and Lotteries Amendment Bill, he said the only consistent argument against the measure could come from people opposed to any form of gambling at all — that was, people opposed to the Golden Kiwi, racing, and Lotto. Gamblers’ Anonymous said that Lotto was the least addictive form of gambling because there was no “instant gratification.” Racing was the most addictive, and next came “one-arm bandits.” “Racing is instant gratification, instant disappointment, instant high, instant low,” Mr Moore said.
If members of Parliament were concerned about gambling problems they should move an amendment to the bill to ban racing. “Of course they won’t do it,” he said.
