Residents question attitude to poll

Residents of Governors Bay concerned about the proposed sewerage scheme have questioned the legality of the Health Board’s attitude to a citizens’ poll last year. Up to 75 per cent of ratepayers questioned in the poll were against the loan for the scheme, ,but the board had ignored the opposition and told them that the scheme would proceed anyway, said a Governors Bay resident, Mr Ralph Woodward, who chaired a meeting of concerned residents on Wednesday evening. Up to 70 people were at the meeting at the Allandale Community Centre, including several members of the Mount Herbert County Council, which

had proposed the scheme. Residents at the meeting had also challenged the proposed depth of water at the point of the proposed outfall in Governors Bay, and the figures which were, used as a basis for the water right application to the North Canterbury Catchment Board, Mr Woodward said. Residents thought the depth of water at the outfall at low tide would be a lot lower than the council’s proposed two metres. Residents would now “continue to follow the weaknesses in the scheme” and wait to hear from the council on the legality of the Health Board’s actions, Mr Woodward said.
