Bus falls into hole

Part of Beach Road, North New Brighton, will be closed this morning after a bus fell into a metre-deep hole last evening.

The Christchurch 'Transport Board bus was travelling past the roadworks between Pinewood Avenue and Bower Avenue on Beach Road about 6.30 p.m. yesterday when the edge of the site subsided.

Traffic Senior-Sergeant Syd Bert, of the Ministry of Transport, said the left side of the bus fell into the subsidence.

The driver was not hurt. Traffic Senior-Ser-geant Bert said he did not know of any passenger aboard at the time of the accident.

The bus did not appear to be extensively damaged and was able to be driven away. It was pulled out by a local breakdown firm by 8.30 p.m. The depot inspector at the Transport Board last evening had no comment to make on the incident.
