Elina wins top rose award
PA Palmerston North A cream rose called Elina has won the top award- at this, year’s. New Zealand announced at ‘ -Palmerston North. ‘ ” The big, strong-growing rose was entered by Pat Dickson of Northern Ireland. It won the big award, the Star of the. South Pacific, with a certificate of merit, from 63 entries, mostly from Europe. A National Rose Society councillor, and chairman of the committee running rose trial grounds at Palmerston North, Ms Nola Simpson, said the
standard of roses in this year’s trials was of a higher standard than nor- . mai.. . - • Mrs Simpson said the better standard was partly, because of the new irrigation system' installed at the grounds by the National Rose Society, district rose societies, and the Palmerston North City Council. There were nine other certificates of merit awarded. Each certificate required a minimum of 70 points out of 100 over two years of judging. Last year only four merit awards were made.
