Industry faces ‘dark future’
PA Wellington The aerial topdressing industry faces a dark future unless farmers start spending money on fertiliser again, an industry spokesman told Opposition members of Parliament yesterday. The Aviation Industry Association’s president, Mr John Roseingrave, said the industry was “extremely run down” and there was doubt about how long it could keep going at present spreading levels. Topdressing applications had fallen from about 900,000 tonnes in 1985 to an estimated 200,000 tonnes in the year to June 30, a decline of 76 per cent in two years. “We want someone to encourage the farmer to use our services,” Mr Roseingrave said. “The only way that can be done is for farmers to be paid more for their product.” The Opposition spokesman on agriculture, Mr Falloon, said National had no plans to spend iiundreds of millions of dollars assisting the fertiliser industry. “Our policy will be aimed at bringing back profitability in income so that farmers chose to maintain their properties and, it is hoped, invest in them,” he said.
