Mobil singers begin quest
Twenty-five singers will compete in the Christchurch preliminaries for the Mobil Song Quest today.
They represent a fifth of the entrants in this year’s contest, which will begin today. Preliminaries will be held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to find six finalists for the final in Auckland in August.
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will judge the final. The preliminaries will be judged by a panel of three including Christchurch’s Christopher Doig, a singer and previous winner.
Other panel members are John Gray,, an administrator with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and Helen Young, of Radio New Zealand’s Concert Programme. The judges will hear the 19 Christchurch and six Dunedin singers live and on tape. This is a change from past years when judges have relied on taped performances to judge preliminary contestants.
This year singers may bring along an audience for support at the judging at Kent house in Durham Street.
