Priests invited to welcome Bishop
In a letter sent out to local priests last week, the Right Rev. Matthew Duggan invited them to join him in welcoming the new Bishop-elect, the Right Rev. Basil Meeking, as he assumed the responsibility of chief pastor of the diocese.
“Although he is returning home, he does so after a long time occupied at the Secretariat for Chris-, tian Unity, and thus the greater will be his need to experience our warm reception and loyalty,” said Monsignor Duggan. He said many would
have been touched by the recent concern about the appointment process and the apparent lack of any worth-while consultation, but Monsignor Meeking could not be made responsible for any of it.
"Any seeming inadequacies in authorities beyond him must not inhibit his enjoyment or our fullest co-operation. Our unity as a presbyterate and a diocese is much more important than any disquiet that may be a first response to (learning) this news.”
