Stop-work meeting delays Arahura
PA Wellington A stop-work meeting of ferry officers delayed yesterday’s 10 a.m. sailing of the Arahura from Wellington. The meeting was called by the officers’ union, the Merchant Service Guild, to discuss strategy for pay negotiations which start today. The award covers masters, deck officers, radio officers, pursers and chief stewards on the three ferries. Railways cancelled the 6.40 p.m. Wellington-Pic-ton sailing of the Aratika on Sunday and the PictonWellington 5.40 a.m. sail-
ing yesterday because of the meeting. Also cancelled was Sunday’s 8 p.m. sailing of the freight ferry Arahanga. The notice of industrial action given by the guild more than a week ago relates to a separate award for ships’ officers. That notice expires on April 10. The meeting broke up at 11.30 a.m. A Railways ; Corporation spokesman said it was hoped that the Arahura would sail from Wellington at noon. The 2.20 p.m. return sailing from Picton left about 4 p.m., the spokesman said.
