Strong north entry for Inglewood Stakes

Everything indicates strong North Island representation in the Inglewood Stakes for three-year-old fillies at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting next Monday.

Fillies from North Island stables entered for the $BOOO 1600 m race are Alynda, Astute, Compel, Stara Zagora, and Vol! Star. They make up more than a quarter of the total entry. Alynda, an Australianbred daughter of Nassau, recorded four, wins from five starts, for the Cambridge stable of Alan Jones, at two years, and distinguished herself in her spring three-year-old racing this season by winning class 1 sprints at the Waikato and Counties

meetings. She was also a dead-heating third in the Avondale Jockey Club’s major sprint race, The Concorde. Astute is trained at Waverley by Kevin Gray, and cleared maiden ranks at her second start this season over 1400 m at the Wairarapa New Year meeting.

.Stara Zagora broke through for her first win for the Matamata stable of Jim Gibbs and Roger James in a 1600 m maiden at Ellerslie in February.

Voli Star is a winner from the stable of Don Sellwood, and Compel showed high promise in her three-year-old winning debut at Wanganui in November.
