Promotion council
Sir, —The decision by the Akaroa County Council (March 30) not to forward the levy requested by the Canterbury United Council to fund the Canterbury Promotion Council must be applauded. The reasons quoted by Cr Philip Cooke, “Farmers are not going to get much out of it, nor the average working person,” are sentiments similar to those I expressed last year through this column, that the majority of Christchurch ratepayers do not gain any benefits from the workings of such a council. Perhaps it is time the user-pays principle should apply to this council’s funding. — Yours, etc., STEPHEN WICKHAM. April 2, 1987.
