Labour Government
Sir,— Most of us know that economically the country isn’t doing very well. Yet we keep awarding ourselves wage increases. It seems, paradoxical that just prior to the next inevitable wage round, civil servants are losing their jobs and post offices and coal mines are being shut down. I hope the Labour Government understands what it is doing. It is ensuring that some people maintain their standard of living, even improve it, against an over-all downward trend — and the rest of the population suffers. It used to be a basic premise of the Labour Party that if we had to take a step backward, we all took a step backwards not just some of us. The consequences are almost certainly a loss at the next election and even more serious, the dissolution of the Labour Party as such.— Yours, etc., ALAN FALLOON. March 17, 1987.
