Superannuation

Sir,—The Heylen Poll as reported on the front page of "The Press” today states that negative reactions to the surtax are based more on the “principle” than on the specifics involved. Here, then, is a specific for you. As a superannuitant I recently decided to forgo my national superannuation and travel overseas to work for six months. I just about broke even on the deal, but when I returned I found that the money I earned overseas less the tax deducted was subject to New Zealand tax and not only that but at surtax rates. Travel and living costs were disallowed, and the result is that I am faced with an income tax demand I couldn’t meet if I stopped eating. I would have done better to stay home and bludge on superannuation. — Yours, etc., T. F. COOK. March 14, 1987.
