Balanced newsrooms
Sir,—Jim Tully’s commitment to balanced newsrooms is encouraging (March 14). However, numbers alone are a superficial indicator of how well equipped the media is to represent the interests and perspectives of the entire community. The real issue is not how many women and Polynesians sit in our newsrooms, but rather the extent to which they must compromise their unique perspectives in order to succeed in the industry. How many practising mothers have penetrated the editorial ranks? How many bilingual journalists can be found in Christchurch? The community will be no .better served by Polynesian or female journalists so long as career structures, priorities, and value systems continue to be defined by white males. —
Yours, etc., M. TURNER. March 15, 1987.
