Crew escapes as Nelson boat sinks
The skipper and crew of a 10m Nelson oyster boat escaped unscathed on Sunday morning when the boat sank within seconds.
“The sinking was a mystery,” said one of the boat’s owners, Mr John Turner.
The Twilight sank in calm conditions on the first dredge tow of the day, with Saturday’s catch on board.
"It went down by the stern. It took on water very quickly and there was no chance to locate the leak. It was all over in a matter of seconds,” said Mr Turner. The two men on board, Mr John McHugh, of Nelson, and his crew were quickly plucked from the sea by another boat working the same oyster bed, about 10km from Fisherman Island in Tasman Bay. A salvage attempt will be made soon.
