‘Rogernomics’ the big election issue?

PA New Plymouth The failure of “Rogernomics” and its associated problems will unquestionably be the main issue of this year's General Election, says the former Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon.

In New Plymouth, at the invitation of the New Plymouth member of Parliament, Mr Tony Friedlander, Sir Robert addressed a public meeting last evening. Allied to the problems of “Rogernomics” and its failure to right the economy, was the total lack of social conscience by a party which has always claimed a monopoly on social concern, Sir Robert said.

The Labour Government’s policy had taken no account of the huge destruction of communi-

ties, such as the West Coast of the South Island and Huntly.

Families with established homes in some of these areas were finding they could no longer live there. They were forced to move to larger centres and their homes became derelict, Sir Robert said.

“It has long been Labour, Party policy that it cares about the community, but it does not give a damn about it today,” he said. The social and further economic impacts of the Government’s present economic policy had to be addressed, he said.

It did not make sense that thousands of people were forced to leave rural areas to get jobs, he said. People, not just farm workers, needed to be given jobs so they could

get their feet back on the ground to re-establish rural communities.

A short-term rescue operation was needed, Sir Robert said. Details of National’s economic policy might be released closer to the elections to see what the economic situation was at that time, he said. Asked if he would like to be Prime Minister again, Sir Robert said yes, but only because of what he termed the poor performance of the present Prime Minister, Mr Lange.

Other election issues could include nuclear disarmament and defence matters, and unemployment, he said. The Government could this year lose a number of sympathy votes because of its economic policy relating to unemployment.
