Candidate 'not surprised’
PA Hamilton The new National candidate for Hamilton East is Mrs Sandra Shearer. .As the former wife of Dr lan Shearer, a former member of Parliament for Hamilton East, Mrs Shearer, aged 40. said the candidacy would hold no surprises.
She was not surprised bv her selection in the
first ballot from an Auckland teacher, Ms Carol Freeman, and a former Hamilton City councillor, Ms May Woodcock. A local person must have an advantage over an outsider, she said. Her long involvement with the National party and knowledge of the electorate would have stood her in good stead. Mrs Shearer said her
decisiveness and directness appealed to many delegates. ‘‘A lot of people like that. Some people don’t but the majority of people like someone who is straight down the line,” she said.
Her campaign team would get together to work on strategy within the next few days, she said.
