$400,000 final in 1988

A stake of $400,000 will be attached to the grand final of the 1988 Fosters Inter-Dominion Championship series to be run at Harold Park, Sydney, between March 4 and 18 next.

Announcing details of the programme, the president of the New South Wales Harness Racing Club, Mr Stan Hedges, said that the proposed stakes were a minimum only.

Stakes for the heats and consolation races will be $25,000. Preferential barrier draw procedure will be adopted for the first round of heats over 1960 m, the third round of heats over 2350 m and the final, to be run over 2700 m, will also have a preferential draw, which came under heavy criticism when first it was used in Melbourne in 1984. There will be a random draw for the second round of mile heats. Stakes of about $l.l million will be distributed over the four nights when the supporting races will include the New South Wales Pacing Derby.
