East and West
Sir, —Had R. Lewis specified in his letter of March 9 exactly what he thinks are “the very things Mr Gorbachev is fighting to liberate Russia from,” it could then have been seen if they were, in fact, “the very things that Mr Creel and Left-wingers are still advocating. — Yours, etc.,
M. CREEL. March 9, 1987.
Sir, —I am amused at the debate between M. Creel and his detractors. One tries to make some sense of the argument, but from where I stand, it is difficult to do. First, the “fact” that “the Russians are in Afghanistan as allies not invaders.” The Americans were in - Vietnam as allies not invaders. The Russians went into Hungary as allies not invaders. The Anglo-Saxons got into Britannia as allies of the Romano-British not, invaders. The Romans got into PalestineJudea as allies of the Jews not invaders. Methinketh M. Creel doth protest too much. For my part, I am mostly apolitical. I lean towards a socialistic theory, but I am not so obsessed with any one position as to forget reality. Preserving humanity from itself is, I think, a much more creditable goal than playing party politics.—Yours, etc.,
WESLEY PARISH. March 10, 1987.
