Atheists and morality

Sir, —As an atheist, but hopefully not a wimp, I was very much incensed by the implications of the statements of the National M.P. for Whangarei, Mr John Banks, in “More Christians needed” (March 7). He implied that atheists are somewhat deficient in morality when compared with Christians, and that Christians would serve our country better. This stinks of Ku Klux Klan. It is very worrying when members of Parliament use their high profile to purvey such personal prejudice. It must sadden the hearts of more tolerant Christians and the National Party that Mr Banks is their spokesman.—Yours, etc., EVAN J. BEGG. March 9, 1987.
