Sir, —G. Riordan’s letter (March 7) is just one more attack on Railways employees. They are almost immune to criticism now as they have been considered fair game for years. More than 3000 Railways workers have been made redundant in the last year. The redundant coal miners have received a lot of sympathy. State Coal can hardly be proud of its financial record; losses for 20 of the last 21 years. The New Zealand Forest Service, which has been overstaffed for years, also has a poor financial record. Forestry workers have their perks — they get free firewood, N.Z.E.D, employees get cheap electricity, Post Office workers can make cheap toll calls. The list goes on. These State employees have helped to pay Mr Riordan’s wages. If Kaikoura loses many more public servants, Mr Riordan may find his own name on the redundancy list. — Yours, etc.,
A. M. MCALLISTER Kaikoura, March 9, 1987.
