Crime report
Sir,—The report on the inquiry into violence is refreshingly realistic. Liberal views about reducing crime, etc., are mainly long-term but something more drastic is wanted for the immediate future. In advocating tougher measures, however, the committee recommended the abolition of corporal punishment, which seems contradictory. In fact, society may be forced to reintroduce the death penalty for large-scale drug-smuggling — more serious than murder. I agree “taht there is a sad lack of spiritual values,” as I wrote about in 1981. I still ascribe this to the general sense of insecurity of life caused by the nuclear and environmental threats. Insecurity leads people (and animals) to do strange things. Remove them and we might see a new renaissance of the human spirit. I think a spiritual revival is not far away, but it will take a very different form from what we understand today by religion. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. March 7, 1987.
