Antarctic mining

Sir,—During May, the Antarctic “minerals negotiations” continue and will possibly be concluded with the signing of a convention in which mining operators will have no legal liability to pay for environmental damage. This could be disastrous for the animals, plants, and other natural features of Antarctica. If liability provisions are negotiated separately at a later date they will be subject to pressure from mining companies. New Zealand is renowned for her beautiful landscape and her people’s concern to maintain this condition.

As an Antarctic Treaty nation, New Zealand should show equal concern for her southern neighbour, especially in this centennial year for national parks. The “minerals negotiations" are being hurried through with scant concern for including conservation measures. The public have hardly been informed or involved in policy formulation. Do we want to allow for the possibility of mining at all? If not then we will have to speak quickly. — Yours, etc., PAUL BROADY. March 6, 1987.
