Demand for tractors nosedives
PA Wellington Only 887 new tractors were registered in 1986, the lowest number on record.
Last year’s motorvehicle registration figures, given by the Motor Registration Centre in Palmerston North, show the second-lowest number of tractors was 1793 recorded last year. In 1947, the first year tractor registrations were recorded, 2526 tractors were registered. New car registrations for 1986 were 80,021, the smallest number since 1972. Once again Japanese manufacturers were top, their cars accounting for more than 70 per cent of registrations.
