No racial jokes

NZPA-ReuterLong Branch Employees of the oceanside town of Long Branch, New Jersey, can still enjoy a laugh on the job, but they have been officially ordered not to make jokes at the expense of racial or ethnic groups. The order was contained in pay envelopes. States officials said the municipal order was unprecedented. The Long Branch City Administrator, Anthony Muscillo, said the order was issued after the New Jersey Civil Rights Division awarded a black employee $l5OO ($2670) for her "humiliation” at overhearing jokes with racial slurs. Legal fees could add SUSSOOO ($8900) to the award, which the city must pay the woman. Mr Muscillo said he did not regard the city’s workforce of 200 as being prejudiced, but “we’d rather be safe than sorry. We can’t afford another lawsuit.”
