Trip in doubt

A big year looms for Canterbury’s leading cueist, Dave Meredith. He is scheduled to make two trips overseas, to the world amateur billiards championship in July and the world amateur snooker championship in October. However, there' is a snag with the billiards. Sri Lanka has recently withdrawn as the venue and whether the tournament goes ahead will depend on a new venue being found. Singapore and Belgium have been mentioned as possible alternatives. Another Canterbury man, Brian Kirkness, who beat Meredith in last year’s national billiards final, is also down to

attend the world event, and the pair were set to play a seeding match next month, until Sri Lanka dropped its bombshell. Meredith is the present New Zealand snooker champion and he can look forward with more confidence to his trip to India for this world event. On the local scene, the South Island championships will be played in Dunedin in May, the Canterbury closed championships in June-July, the Canterbury opens in August and the nationals this year will be at Pukekohe in September. The inter-club competitions start on March 23, the billiards first and then the snooker.
