Volleyball booms
An exciting and successful triples tournament in the Pioneer Stadium last week launched the Christchurch volleyball season with a bang. The sport is burgeoning in the south, and competitors can look forward to a busy and eventful season. The winter competitions will run from April until August, and entries for all grades will close at the end of next week. Last season Pioneer teams shone in both the men’s and women’s sections of the Southern Zone league competition, but other clubs are bound to
throw out strong challenges in the coming months. Shirley showed it will be a tough competitor by winning its own club’s triples final, with Kate Kerdemelidls excelling in the back court and Colin Redpath and Grant Waller combining well at the net , Daito Bunka, a team from a renowned volley-ball-playing country, Japan, will visit this country in August for a test series against New Zealand, and in October the national side will travel to Kuwait to contest the Asian championship.
