Record sugar cane harvest in Fiji
NZPA Suva Fiji has made its highest sugar sales, earning about SF2OO million from more than 500,000 tonnes of sugar produced last year, said the managing director of the Fiji Sugar Marketing Company, Ltd, Mr John May. Mr May said not all the sugar sold had been taken out of the country. “Some countries don’t want their shipments immediately so the stock will remain in Fiji for a
few months,” he said. New Zealand bought 28,000 tonnes at world market prices and 32,000 tonnes at “preferential” prices. “We have no problem selling all the sugar produced,” Mr May said. Last year’s good harvest had been put down to the absence of cyclones and drought in that year. Cyclone Raja hit Fiji on New Year’s Eve but by that time nearly all the cane had been taken to the mills for crushing.
