Airline reviewing N.Z. services
PA Auckland United Airlines says it is reviewing plans to expand services to New Zealand in the light of a big increase in landing fees at airports in this country. The general manager of the airline’s Pacific division, Mr Donald Moonjian, who was in New Zealand on Friday, described the fees increase as ludicrous.
The doubling of fees earlier in the year would cost United an extra $1.2 million annually, Mr Moonjian said.
“That is enough to make any company seriously rethink its strategy.” United, based in Chicago, has eight flights a week into Auckland. The company, which took over the routes of Pan American Airways last year, planned to double its Pacific operations by 1990, said Mr Moonjian. Three extra flights would be introduced to Australia this year, but the company had no immediate plans to increase flights to New Zealand.
