Banned film wins
NZPA-Reuter West Berlin Soviet cinema, grappling with a legacy of stifling bureacracy from the Brezhnev era, received a boost yesterday when a film long banned in Moscow won West Berlin’s coveted Golden Bear award.
But the triumphant director, Gleb Panfilov, aged 49, said Soviet film makers should not be complacent about a relaxation of censorship under
the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. “We still have to work hard if we want to make this trend irreversible. We must not be afraid to take on difficult topics. There’s still much to be done,” he said after the award ceremony. Panfilov’s film, "The Theme,” was banned after completion in 1979. Only after a big shakeup in the Film Makers Union last January was it finally released,
