Cheaper paper Bitter rivalry between London’s evening dailies intensified yesterday as the recently resuscitated “Evening News” slashed its price by half to a negligible sp. The move came two days after Robert Maxwell chopped the price of his newlycreated “London Daily News” from 20p to lOp. — London. Royal hernia Prince Philip has undergone a hernia operation, Buckingham Palace said yesterday. The Prince, aged 65, who is said to enjoy good health apart from arthritis in his wrists, underwent surgery last Friday and was released on Saturday. — London. Spokesman resigns Michael Shea, the courtier with a habit of frank talk that often, embarrassed the Royal’ Family, has resigned after nine years as the Queen’s spokesman. His replacement will be Robert Janvrin, a career diplomat with the Foreign Office. — London.
Large pancake Chefs at a hotel in western England have whipped up a 7.6 m-wide pancake to claim a world record. The monster pancake, cooked in a specially-made twotonne steel frying-pan as part of Cheltenham’s Shrove Tuesday celebrations, contained 5274 eggs, 418 litres of milk, 232 kg of flour and 75kg of cornflour, and was cooked in 52 litres of oil. — Cheltenham.
