Sympathy for D.S.I.R.

PA Wellington D.S.I.R. seismologists did the right thing in making predictions about the likelihood of a big earthquake in Bay of Plenty, said the director of Civil Defence, Mr Edward Latter, yesterday. “I have great sympathy for the D.5.1.R.. We cannot predict with great accuracy what the force (of an earthquake) will be,” Mr Latter said.

A senior seismologist, Dr Euan Smith, said last Monday that a big earthquake or volcanic eruption was unlikely, just a few hours before the earthquake struck.

He said later it might have been better to have said nothing at all, adding that there was "no guarantee that a major earthquake will not occur almost anywhere in New ZealFpd at any time.” ■,
